When Claycomerd construction company announced it was building a new office building in the city of Denver, many in the media thought the company was just a new tenant for a tenant who was already using a popular theme park theme.
But when it was revealed that the building would be built on a landfill, the reaction was much different.
While the media didn’t exactly call the landfill a theme park, the concept of “waste land” was still an important part of the project.
The building was to be called the Clayco Wasteland, and it was to house one of the largest construction projects in the US history, to the tune of about $3 billion.
Claycomers office, built on the landfill, would have offices, restaurants, stores, a cinema, a hotel, and, of course, the Claycomercan theme park.
A major theme park was a natural fit for the building, given that it was the site of a park and an amusement park, and that it has an enormous theme park attraction and a massive recycling plant.
In fact, this was the very first time that the term “wasteland” had been used to describe a public building in a major American city, let alone the city in which Claycomery was based.
And while the building itself had a few aesthetic differences from its current incarnation, most of them were small changes that didn’t impact the overall theme of the building.
It was a project that Claycomierd would have never attempted to do in a large-scale manner, and even the name of the company wasn’t particularly revolutionary, since it was based in the UK.
The construction workers who would live and work at the site were going to be dressed in clay-coloured suits and leather jackets, and were going have to wear the same clothes they were used to.
It wouldn’t be the first time a theme-park theme park had taken on a public construction project in the United States, and this was definitely the first such project that had been built using landfill space.
But as a major construction project that would have required massive amounts of landfill space and had to accommodate thousands of people, the idea of building a large public construction site for a theme show park and the associated environmental concerns had some significant hurdles to overcome.
The biggest hurdle, though, was that the construction site would be located on the outskirts of Denver.
The city of Boulder was already facing a water shortage, and the site had to be located at a convenient point, close to major transit lines.
The company also had to find a site that would be suitable for the landfill.
“We had to make sure that we didn’t lose any of the amenities that would come with having a public place,” says Claycomeric spokesperson John Rolfe.
“For us, it was a challenge to get our foot in the door with that.”
Building a theme parks theme park is a challenge because the public isn’t necessarily familiar with the concept, and construction sites in general are generally seen as relatively inaccessible.
The idea of public buildings built on public land and then being used to store, clean, and recycle garbage was not something that had ever been done before in the history of the United Kingdom.
“I think this is really the first instance where public construction has been used for a public purpose,” says Rob McLeod, director of the Sustainable Infrastructure Programme at the UK Environmental Audit Agency (UKEA).
“We have used public infrastructure to build public facilities, and we have used that to build other public facilities in the past.”
Building in a landfill in the middle of the city is a risky proposition, and for the most part, it hasn’t been a success story.
For example, when construction began in 2011, the public were concerned that the site would take up valuable real estate.
“There was a sense that it would take a while for the construction to actually get started,” says McLeod.
“And the public also weren’t sure if it would be able to make a profit out of it.”
However, the first few weeks of construction were successful for the company, with profits climbing from around $1 million to more than $2 million in just a few weeks.
And in October, the company announced that it had sold its first land for $6 million, and had raised $30 million from investors.
The first phase of construction is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
The next phase is expected this year, and a public park will be built in the park as part of that construction.
However, McLeod says that the environmental impacts of the site have been a major challenge.
“It’s very challenging for people to walk past the landfill and see what it looks like,” he says.
“That’s something that’s really challenging for a lot of people who work in the area.”
